Into The Fray

about

This song is cinematic in scope. Each part was recorded in a single pass. I first played the steel pan drum on it's own. This is a tuned percussion instrument that is tuned to a minor 7th scale. It is augmented by Japanese Taiko drums, a bowed piano, and a sparse dark sounding upright piano. The entire arrangement came together in a single afternoon.

I'm very visual and I usually have a visual story running though my head when I write or compose - much like a running movie that plays in my brain. With this particular song, I've always envisioned it as a soundtrack to an epic movie. It's at the scene before the big battle when our hero is deciding whether or not to do the hard thing he is confronted with. It plays out with a warrior in medieval times standing on a beach reflecting on the atrocities that have been done to him and his people. He is facing the choice of his life. Does he stand up and do what's right, or does he just go back to life as usual? Will he embrace his destiny even if it means risking it all?

Straying into territory occupied by bands like Moby, Massive Attack, Boards of Canada, and Radiohead, Soulflier blends glitchy electronica with organic folk sensibilities.
