Twilight

about

I sat down at the piano one afternoon, pressed record, and just played. This is what came out. It's a minimal piece that has more in common with classical than most songs on the album.

This song is one of realization. Of coming out of the dark battle into the light of the new day. Twilight. When the first rays of sun are starting to shine through the trees. The battle has been won, but not without it's cost. It's not time for celebration just yet.

Most modern music has a very fixed and rigid tempo. That wasn't always the case. Tempo ebbs and flows in Classical music. In addition to melody, tempo changes and variations can be a powerful creative tool for the artist. I intentionally turned my click track off and played with tonal and tempo variations. I basically just played what was in my heart with no script or plan. That doesn't always work, but it did in this case. I later went in and added flute, cello, orchestral, and synth sounds.

Straying into territory occupied by bands like Moby, Massive Attack, Boards of Canada, and Radiohead, Soulflier blends glitchy electronica with organic folk sensibilities.
